Willie was here...

Well last night Willie came to town. The holy man of the honky tonk brought the show to town. At 73, many are happy to sit for a rest. Not Willie from the start of "Whiskey River" on thru he had the audience with the exception of Grover in the palm of his hand. Seriously he is still great. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band opened for him, they've been around for over 40 years. Usually when the opening act is on the arena is half full. Not for these guys. Tight. Super tight, though they didn't play "Cadillac Ranch" I'm sure I will get by. This was the third time I've seen Willie.

First time was 15 years ago when he came to town with The Highwaymen, one of those shows I was very thankful to get to. Willie, Waylon, Johnny and Kris. AWESOME! I met Willie that night outside the Metro Centre before the show. I was sitting in the passenger seat of a car and I looked and there he was. I jumped out of a moving car and approached him. He was in "full effect" taking in Citadel Hill. We talked for a minute or so. Then I went in met Dad and said "Guess who I was talking to?" he said "Bullshit really?". I said he's wearing a farm aid jacket and a captain's hat. Lights go down and out comes Willie. Still in the same gear. As you know I am a huge music fan and this show is on the top of my glad to have seen list.

Last year I saw Willie and Bob Dylan in Florida outside in a thunder and lightning storm. Willie was the opener for that one so it was only an hour or so. That night was the last time I really spoke to Uncle Doug. I called to let him know I was going to see his favorite. I think it pissed him off more than anything else. I hope he was looking down tonight.

Yesterday Willie's bus was here in Fall River at the Inn on the Lake. I wanted to jump out again but we were going to fast and Grover wouldn't slow down. Anyway I am glad I got to go see him again. He's still got it and if I can I'll go again.
